Books:Hunter III, George G. How to Reach Secular People. Nashville; Abingdon Press, 1992. (This is one of my favorites.) Sargeant, Kimon Howland. Seeker Churches: Promoting Traditional Religion in a Nontraditional Way. New Brunswick, NJ; Rutgers University Press, 2000. (I liked this one a lot). Dobson, Ed. Starting a Seeker Sensitive Service: How Traditional churches Can Reach the Unchurched. Grand Rapids, MI, Zondervan Publishing, 1993. (he has an interesting approach.) Barna, George. Re-churching the Unchurched. Ventura, CA; Issachar Resources, 2000. (I like some of Barna's research but I don't agree with the way he interprets some of his numbers. His theology is too conservative.) Barna, George. Evangelism That Works: How to Reach Changing Generations With the Unchanging Gospel. Ventura, CA; Issachar Resources, 2000. Barna, George. Building Effective Lay Leadership Teams, Ventura, CA; Issachar Resources, 2001. Easum, William M. Church Growth Handbook. Nashville; Abingdon Press, 1990. Easum, William M. Sacred Cows Make Gourmet Burgers: Ministry Anytime, Anywhere, By Anyone. Nashville; Abingdon Press, 1995. (This one's great.) Sweet, Leonard. Soul Tsunami: Sink or Swim in New Millennium Culture. Grand Rapids, Michigan, Zondervan Publishing, 1999. (one of the first I read on this subject and I was really excited by it which lead to further exploration. The confuses me sometimes. He has a great website). Peart, Norman Anthony. Separate No More: Understanding and Developing Racial Reconciliation in Your Church. Grand Rapids, MI; Baker Books, 2000. (I think contemporary/seeker worship is an opportunity to try and be less Euro-centric and more multicultural. This book talks about some of the issues pertaining to trying to get church more multicultural). Lingenfelter, Sherword G. Ministering Cross Culturally. Grand Rapids, Baker Books, 1986. (I can't remember anything about this one so either I didn't read it or it wasn't that interesting.) Also: Making Room at the Table by Brian K. Blount and Leonora Tubbs Tisdale, editors. Liberalseekers.org supports
UCC and other theologically progressive churches. UCC has created some
outstanding ads that will appeal to many seekers but most UCC churches,
like most theologically progressive churches, still practices an oldfashioned,
traditional type of worship that we believe will mystify and alienate
most seekers. We encourage UCC and other theologically progressive churches
to start updating their worship services and offer alternatives to traditional
worship that regular people can relate to. Progressive theology is great
but is irrelevent if nobody hears it. It is time for theologically progressive
churches to start speaking to the many "unchurched Harry's"
of the world in language and rhythms they can relate to. The religious
right has learned to speak the language and use the rhythms of the common
people. Theologically progressive clergy need to lose the robes and come
down off their high podiums. It is time for theologically progressive
churches to break free of restictive hymnals and 18th century organ music.
It is time for theological liberals to connect with the hearts and emotions
of the people and not just the mind and intellect.
